Want to Help Protect Your GarCo Libraries? Yes, YOU CAN

Our libraries are under attack from groups pushing for censorship by wanting to restrict books, removing diverse voices, and trying to control access to information. These efforts can often happen quietly, during sparsely attended meetings where few are watching, or when loud fringe voices dominate the conversation. And now, with our library board effectively controlled by the Board of County Commissioners, it’s more important than ever that we show up and speak out. That’s why showing up matters.

When you attend library board meetings, you help ensure that these spaces remain inclusive, educational, and free from political agendas. Your presence sends a clear message: we support our librarians, we support intellectual freedom, and we will not let a small group speak for our entire community.

No Kings Day Protest June 14

When we broke away from the British crown, it wasn’t just about tea or taxes. It was about ideas — and the right to access them. The king didn’t want regular people reading freely. For a long time in England, books had to be licensed and approved by the government, and even when that law technically ended, the crown still used its power to punish people who printed things it didn’t like.

Under King George III, the monarchy used censorship and fear to stay in control. The Stamp Act even taxed every single piece of printed material in the colonies which included newspapers, pamphlets, anything that might spread ideas. And if you dared to criticize the king in print, even if it was true, you could be arrested for something called “seditious libel.”

The truth is, kings fear readers. Tyrants fear libraries. That’s why the British crown was terrified of pamphlets like Common Sense and the printing presses of Franklin and other revolutionaries. Because the more people read, the harder they are to control.

The American Revolution wasn’t just fought with weapons. It was fought with words. With banned books. With public reading spaces. That’s part of what we were fighting for, and it’s a shame we have to stand up for it all over again.

No kings then, no kings now.

Colorado Communities standing up to Christian nationalism

Renowned Journalist Logan Davis to speak in Glenwood Springs on Christian nationalism

An opportunity to learn how far-right movements are impacting small communities like ours and what we can do to stop them.

Investigative journalist Logan Davis will be speaking at the Glenwood Springs Branch Library on Friday, July 12, 2024 at 6 p.m.

This free event is being sponsored by Protect Our GarCo Libraries.

Davis is an expert on Christian nationalism and a leading reporter for the Colorado Times Recorder. His work, including a seven-part series on the impact of the far-right on a small town near Colorado Springs called Woodland Park, sheds light on the profound challenges Christian nationalism poses to democratic values and a pluralistic society.

Having been raised in a conservative evangelical community himself, Davis provides a unique perspective into this topic. His presentation on July 12, Colorado communities stand up to Christian nationalism, will provide crucial insights into Christian nationalism and discuss strategies for effective resistance. The Q & A following his presentation will allow attendees to engage directly with one of Colorado's leading investigative journalists.
